Better Internal Bluetooth Modules? (Orochi Problems)
Anyone know any? I got the Orochi for Christmas but the it lags immensely on wireless mode when I game. Did some testing and it was mostly caused by the U1 notepal cooling pad I use. I really like using the cooling pad, so I was wondering if I could just replace the Bluetooth module in my m11x for a better stronger one.
And so I shoved a CF-30 DVD burner in a CF-29 Caddy...
I didn't know this was possible until I got a shipment of 40 CF-29's in today and 2 of the drives were actually CF-30 DVD burner drives. See the attached pic...
Internet Explorer has stopped working
I get this messge fequently that Internet Explorer has stopped working. I have IE 8. I also get Your Last Browsing Session Closed Unexpectedly I have done a sfc /scannow, and Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. I went to Microsoft fix it and it said Microsoft Fix it Center found several problems on this computer.
I have done a scan disk for errors
This all started when I did a restore about a week ago. At that time I would get the messages but not very often but now I get them every day throughout the day. And I do not know what else to do. Do any of you all? Many thanks. I do hope I do not have to do a Recovery as when I had Vista I had to do five of them and I have just had Windows 7 maye two to three weeks now.
I really do not understand it. I scan for viruses every other day and scan every day for malware.

Problems playing Blu-Ray disc (HT BD 1252)
When playing Blu-rays I have found that the player skips back scenes and occassionally the chapter title block appears at the foot of the screen as each chapter moves along.
I've checked for firmware updates but my machine appears to be up to date.
The player is only about 6-7 months old and is stored in a clean, dry and ventilated area.
Suggestions?

cpu and ram meter 2.1 seen as trojan.gen (cnet downwload)
Norton internet security recently identified this on my computer as a trogen.gen
I am wondering whether this is newly discovered or an error. I found out as it did not load on boot... I submitted to symantec, but was wondering as it indicated it as a safe download. I dont think its become infected by another virus, it states it as a high risk as of December this year.... removed it on 28th...
Anyone know anything about it? I restored the file from a backup and it instantly removed it...

How to get your dead XPS M1210 fixed!
My XPS M1210's GPU failed last august, three months out of the manufacturer's warranty. To my amazement, people had been reporting the same problem with their M1210's on internet forums for over a year. Ironically, the GPUs seem to fail within months of
I was upset to see that the XPS M1210 is NOT covered in this extended warranty program, despite clearly having the same defect in the Nvidia die package. I have spent more than 15 hours on the phone with dell tech support, trying to get them to help me with this issue. Their service was infuriating. They would keep passing me to different departments, having me re-explain myself over and over, and in the end, not helping me with my problem.
Because of their poor service, and refusal to admit to a critical design fault in what should be a top of the line gaming laptop, I now have a grudge against dell. I have scoured the internet in search for a solution to this problem, and I'm happy to say that I've finally found one.
I found that Dell has helped one customer with their faulty M1210 graphics card, and this person was kind enough to give me their case number. I called dell's tech support and told them that they fixed my friend's M1210 graphics card (requiring a motherboard replacement), and I would like the same service. Dell supported one customer's machine, so they should support all of ours, right?
So, here is what you have to do if you want Dell to fix your faulty M1210 GPU/Motherboard:
Call their customer service and tell them "Dell fixed my friend Scott, and my other friend Nick's M1210 graphics cards (requiring a motherboard replacement), and I would like the same service." Reference the following case numbers:
Scott's case number: 633668288
Nick's case number: 631589518
Dell will then have no choice but to give you the same service that they gave us. But be sure that your M1210 has died due to a fault Nvidia GeForce GO 7400 graphics card, and be ready to explain the symptoms that your computer shows to the tech support person. My symptoms were a blank screen with no display on the LCD, or an external monitor. Some people that have this issue see vertical lines on boot up. Do some research to make sure that it's your GPU that has failed.
Lets let Dell know that they can't get away with covering up this major defect in the M1210.
Also - If you have success with this method, please post your case number here for others to use as a reference. If we can accumulate enough case numbers, Dell might throw in the towel and admit to the problem existing with the M1210 as well.
Case Numbers supporting the fight:
Scott - 633668288
Nick's - 631589518

Moving Music Files to External Hard Drive
I am running out of space on my laptop so I am moving all my music to an external hard drive. If I keep my file directory structure and naming the same, can I simply "re-point" iTunes to this new storage location and all my songs (etc...) will keep working in iTunes? Will storing the music on an external hard drive effect the performance (speed) of iTunes and/or iPod syncing?

Slickie88's OSD icons - Modded
EDIT A: New release of the Fallout 3 icon pack for the M11xR1 and R2. Added the battery icons. This should complete the set for the
1. Ensure that you're running OSD A04 and the latest BIOS for your M11x model.
2. Download my OSD mod and unpack the AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe file to your desktop.
3. Start the Task Manager and END the AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe process.
4. Go to C:Program Files (x86)Alienware On-Screen Display and rename your existing AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe file to AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe.BAK
5. Copy the unpacked AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe from your dekstop to the C:Program Files (x86)Alienware On-Screen Display folder.
6. Double-click the file and you're all set.
From now on you'll be running with the modified Fallout 3 OSD icons. Should you ever wish to revert back to the stock icons, then simply stop the OSD process again, delete or rename the current exe and then remove the .BAK extenstion from the original. Essentially it's the same procedure as outlined above for switching back.
For support, please post questions to THIS thread.

v 0.906
* Added battery state icons. Could not get alpha channel transparency to work in these, so I've added a square background that fits the rest of the pip-boy look. Booo BMP format.
v 0.801 (initial release)
* All display states, LCD brightness levels, volume levels, mute/unmute and radio enable/disable icons have been completed.
* For some reason battery state image resources in the original OSD application are saved as BMP images. As a result I'll be adding alpha channel info for those images. The hold up is that I'm working on trying see if I can manage to get PNG's to work as a replacement format. It's either that or I add alpha channels to all of the exported BMPs... Thanks OSD authors. Really appreciate the sloppy work.
EDIT B: I'll also be working on these for the M15x and M17x. Both models have quite a bit more icons, so they'll come after I've completed the M11x set.

Windows Vista frequent "Not Responding"
Hi,
I was just wondering if there Windows Vista who experience a problem like mine. My Windows Vista frequently not responding. If I do one thing, I have to wait until it's done. If I click a second time on any open program, I get that "Not Responding" error message and I have to wait about 10 to 15 seconds. This is very frequent.
Thanks for your help.

upgraded E6400 from CCFL to LED screen
I just did the upgrade to go from an 1280x800 CCFL to an 1440x900 LED as I was finding the lower resolution screen too restrictive.
It is a very easy mod, albeit with the usual stumbling blocks as I could not find any note of it having been done before on the web.
The video cable from the motherboard to the screens is different.
The CCFL screen has 2 connectors, one to the screen and one to the inverter which sits beneath LCD panel. The inverter is also connected to a branch off the video cable which comes from the motherboard up through the left hand hinge.
The LED screen has a single connector, and its, different, video cable to motherboard, has a shorter voltage regulator which sits beneath the LED panel, just to the right of the left hand hinge. There are screw holes for mounting either inverter/regulator from respective video cables, in the same place.
The first LED panel which I tried was not compatible, it gave the dreaded black screen - very barely visible picture. This was either an incompatibility, just bad luck of a bad screen, or somehow the panel EDID was defective/not set up for , and works perfectly with the different video cable. The same panel works with both Intel and Nvidia GPU.
Should note that for the E6400 at least, both lids work vice versa, although the CCFL lid needs slight modding to take the LED panel and the plastic bezel is a little thinner on the lower side between the CCFL and the LED, so for looks I also got a lid/bezel.
I am posting this here as most of the google hits went to posts on the forum, but there was nothing specific I could find on the E6400, and hope this saves others some time.
The screen that works is an LG
LP141WP2 (TL) (A1) 14.1" WXGA+
and its (subjectively) a better resolution for the laptop size. I have not done any image correction so far, but between them the LED is much brighter, and the whites are more yellow. The CCFL (at standard settings also) was a bluer white.

BDP 1600 Will not connect to Netflix
I'm trying to connect my Samsung BDP1600 to Netflix.
The player has been upgraded to the latest firmware, and is connected by a cable directly to the modem (router not blocking anything).
When the player starts up there is only a youtube option, and no netflix, etc.
How do I get this thing to connect? Any help is appreciated.

Can't find an M15x MOBO anywhere!!!
Hi guys,
First of all, I'm talking about the new M15x so don't get confused about the older Area 51 model. So, as it has happen to some of the guys in this forum, the MOBO of my M15x just died yesterday, and the worst part is that my warranty just ended 1 month ago
and I didn't extend it cuz during all the 1st year my M15x just performed magnificent without any problem till now
so I have to buy the MOBO, and here is the problem: Dell only sells a refurbished kit costing almost $600 bucks
but I don't need the whole kit, just the MOBO. I've been trying to find one on the net but it seems that no one sells them, any ideas guys? Thanks.

BSOD on ASUSG51VX.. help please!
I've been getting the BSOD every time I log into my laptop. The only way to access my laptop without having the BSOD is through safemode.
Is there anyway I can fix this problem? Early thanks.

Sound volume too low on VPCEA390S
I just received a custom made 14" EA series laptop. It is awesome, except for the sound level which is very very low, especially compared to my Dell laptop or to my previous EB series laptop.
I wanted to find out from other users if they also think the sound on their speakers on the EA is very low.
At 30% I can barely hear anything (compares to 5% volume on my Dell)
At 70% I can hear something (compares to 25% volume on my Dell)
At 100% I can hear it well but it only compares to 50% volume on my Dell (15.6")
I reinstalled the Realtek sound driver and it did not help. Any ideas?

Notebookreview.com's Review of the Alienware M11x Gaming Notebook
video
According to Dell the M11X
- Scores 6000 to 7000 3DMarks (I'm guessing 3DMark06 looking at the specs of the graphic card).
- Has 6 and a half hours of battery life and over 2 hours during "intense" gaming.
- Runs Call of Duty MW2 on high settings and HD resolution at more than 30 frames per second.
- Runs Crysis at 50 frames per second. (Unknown settings)

Battery life, heat, noise and more on X201t
So I am looking for some more in depth (perhaps first hand) info on how the i7-620LM -25watt- compares to the i5-560M -35 watt- in terms of battery life, heat production, battery charge times during use, actual usability (ie: if you can't run the i5 too hard because it will burn your lap, stuff like that)
I know the i5 is standard voltage (considerably more powerful, especially in terms of graphics) than the low voltage i7. But the i7 is supposed to be pretty powerful on its own accord (especially compared to the SL9400). any conformation on how these chips run under normal use, and how they do on higher use situations?
I am looking to get a X201t as my main computer as I travel around for the next few years, and possibly longer if it will last. I want to get the X201t because it should have a better chance of maintaining usability over the years (as opposed to the X200t) and it should be capable of even the more high demanding things I do (mostly 2d Autocad work, medium-heavy Photoshoping, some web design perhaps, and whatever I pick up over my time with it)
Also I was wondering if anyone found some good expresscard accessories (I found a few expresscard "SSD", but I doubt they perform that well) anything out there that is good?

I have seen tons of Samsung models with the same exact problem. I have seen several responses saying Samsung will take care of the issue since it is a blatent defect. I called Samsung and it was a useless phone call. All they wanted to do was set up a costly repair call for me to pay. Does anyone know if this is worth my time?
Samsund HT-BD1250 Poor Speaker Connections
I received this HTIB set last Christmas and have consistently struggled with sound drop-outs. I believe the connectors between the receiver and the speakers aren't working properly. I sometimes have to reach my hand behind the system to and wiggle and adjust the wires to correct sound decreases and drop every time I use this system. Is there any fix to this issue? Has anyone else solved this problem or experienced this issue?

Seagate XT Good?
I've been thinking about selecting this HDD for the secondary harddrive bay on the ASUS G53JW:
500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid 32MB Cache (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s)
Is it good and worth it or should I get the standard 500GB? Is the primary harddrive bay faster than the secondary harddrive bay?

probleme SD drive and 1394
I've got a problem: my little machine no longer recognise the SD card, neither the 1394 devices. Tried reinstall the drivers from Dell and from JMicron, also tried a clean install and a factory recover (I've the recovery partition intact). But nothing solves the problem. Any suggestions will be grateful.

Samsung LN40B500 Picture shakes when connected through HDMI
I have a brand new 40" Samsung LN40B500. When I connect the TV with the Cablevision Scientific Atlanta cable box using HDMI cable, the picture shakes slightly - but noticeably. I have tried 2 HDMI cables, but results are the same. When I connect to the cable box using component cable, there is no issue. I would like to find out if it is the TV's HDMI input that is the cause of the problem or the cable box so that I can exchange it if necessary. But, since Cable box is the only HDMI capable device I have, I don't have a way of testing this out. Anyone else has experienced this issue with these Samsung TVs?
Thanks

new information for l501x with core i5 processors.
Hello all
I was having issues with duplicating my display on the tv using an HDMI. After a lot of back and forth with the tech team, they called me and informed that the core i5 processor is not capable of cloning the display through an HDMI. It can only do it wirelessly.
So anyone of you who will be using the laptop for HDMI purpose, please order i7 processor.
Also, a question for people with i5 processors on l501x, have you ever tried connecting your laptop to tv through HDMI? do you see exactly the same thing on both the laptop and the TV? Please let me know.
Please also suggest me as to what should I do now, HDMI is my main purpose.
Thank you

Need VGN-NR123E(100E series) recovery disks- help
I have a VGN-NR123E vaio. The harddrive was wiped trying to upgade from vista to win7 but it wont allow me to do a wipe install for whatever reason, something to do with a CD/DVD drive driver missing. Support says i needed to upgrade to win7 directly from in vista but since i cannot get into vista anymore this is a problem.
I need the recovery disks to install vista again but i cant find my set and didnt make a new set before the wipe because i didnt think it would be a issue. Sony doesnt have the VGN-NR100E series recovery disks in stock anymore and im not paying $75 to get them from a third party.

Buffalo router with Tomato firmware--is it dead?
Hey all. I have a Buffalo WHR-G54S with Tomato firmware. It's a few years old but has always worked well. Yesterday I noticed the wireless connection to the laptop was getting erratic and I had to "repair" a few times. Today I woke up to no connection and the SSID is not being broadcast. The laptop sees plenty of other networks, just not mine. I tried to log into the Tomato firmware and the user/password combo (which I KNOW is correct) isn't recognized, so I can't get in. The unit looks normal, all lights are on, and internet passed through the router via Ethernet is OK (using it right now). I've rebooted and power cycled everything a couple of times. We've had some mild storms lately and perhaps a power surge but everything else in the house seems OK. Is there anything I can do to get into the firmware or is this router fried? Just want to make sure before I go spend another $50. Thanks.
Bluetooth 365/370 modules failing-multiple platform,multiple Bluetooth versions
Hello,
I am posting this in an effort (however likely or unlikely) to get attention to a serious matter affecting numerous laptop platforms and multiple Blutooth module versions. Here is the issue-
I have need to use Bluetooth stereo audio functionality (A2DP profile) almost exclusively when I use my laptop.
I had owned a M1330 with the Dell 355 Bluetooth Module for several years without issue. Last November, I decided to upgrade and purchased an M15x (laptop #1) with the Dell 370 Bluetooth module included, running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Not more than one day out of the box,the 370 module failed while watching a movie. It literally disappeared from device manager and no uninstalling/reinstallation of drivers alleviated the situation. The only way to get the radio to be recognized by the operating system was, and is, to shutdown, reboot into bios, disable the card in bios, reboot into windows, restart, boot into bios, enable the card and then reboot into Windows. The card would then work for awhile but eventually fail again. The module works for short periods of time but if put under an extended load, fails. That and other issues with the M15x caused me to return it.
Contacted Dell and returned the M15x and bought and built a Studio XPS 1645 (laptop #2) to replace it. Received the unit and literally within the 1st few hours, the 370 module failed exactly like the M15x.I thought o.k. a bad card and had tech support send out a new module for the XPS 1645. Received and installed it and the exact same problem happened. Failed when under an extended load. Again called tech support and was then dispatched an onsite tech to replace the entire motherboard and card. No resolution-card failed again. Spoke with a resolution specialist and returned it and again purchased a M15x (laptop #3-really liked the M15x over the XPS 1645)
Received the M15x-Bluetooth failure again. At this point, was considering dropping Dell altogether but thought I'd try the Studio 1558 (laptop #4) with the Bluetooth 365 module, in order to rule out the 370 card, first. Ordered and was delivered on the 5th of April, same exact issue-failure of card under a load. I am returning this defective Studio 1558 and again getting a M15x (laptop #5). I realize that the M15x Bluetooth card will fail again-in fact,am 100% sure it will fail, but have bought a Sony Bluetooth transmitter as a workaround.
What appears to be happening is that the card will shutdown when it gets warm. This is either a Broadcom manufacturing defect or a Dell engineering issue. I know now through personal experience that there is a serious issue with Dell Bluetooth cards.
If this was happening with only one laptop, I'd be ok with it but, this is occuring across multiple laptop platforms, with both Broadcom Bluetooth cards that Dell brands and sells.
This is either an oversight by engineering-maybe they didn't test the card under a heavy load, or Dell is knowingly selling defective equipment.
If anyone has a resolution that actually works for this specific situation, please advise.

M17 crashs at load games
Hi everyone.
I have a problem with my laptop and maybe somebody here can help me to solve it.
I have two Ati HD 3870 Crossfire enable, and when i turn on my computer, everything is going perfect. I also can run a game, expample Guild Wars, and is working perfect, no problem at all. The problem arrive when I close the game, and I try to run it again. The screen turn totaly black, and the laptop crash, because the mouse freeze, the keybord doesn't work, etc... So completly crash so I have to force to shut it down... This only happen when I try to run a game the second time without restart the laptop or turn it off and on again.
ATM I'm using the drivers 10.11 Win7 x64 for Notebook (like my OS), with no modification.
Thanks for the help.

Save file dialog on vista. Previously used filenames.
Hi,
When I try to save a file (any type) and I start typing the name, the dialog will unfold a list of previously used file names.
How can I clear this list of proviously used file names?
I'm sure windows store them somewhere.
Thanks.

How do I know which programs, displays, and videos are using the NVIDIA high-performance GPU?
Click the NVIDIA GPU Activity icon in the Windows notification area. The window indicates:
- Which displays and video are accelerated using the NVIDIA high-performance GPU.
- Which display connections are driven by the NVIDIA high-performance GPU.
Note: If there is no GPU Activity icon, click View from the NVIDIA Control Panel menu bar and select Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area. (See Using the View Menu) - Which displays and video are accelerated using the NVIDIA high-performance GPU.

D420 and 430 slow performance thoughts
So I work in IT, and have supported hundreds of D420 and D430 laptops. One very common denominator is extremely slow performance. Almost all of these laptops have hard drives that eventually fail, while half of those also have cooling fans that fail.
Other than the cooling issue, is there any other problems or bottlenecks in the design of this laptop to hinder performance? I'm thinking the 1.8" hard drive could also have something to do with it.

Thinking of installing Ubuntu 10.10
I have an HP 6510b running Windows Vista Business (64-bit).
Specifications are:
T7100
2.5GB of RAM
80GB hard drive
DVD Writer
Card readers
Fingerprint scanner
No webcam
WiFi
Bluetooth
I use the following software:
Chrome Browser
Open Office
Paint.net
Yahoo! Messenger
I was thinking of installing Ubuntu 10.10. I downloaded and run it from a USB drive. Everything seems to work fine. I have no serious complaints about Windows Vista, but I am not a power user. Can anyone give me the pros and cons?

My M15x is suffering something horrible
Well to cut right to the chase my M15x seems like its ready to croak. I've had it since about mid-august and occasionally playing starcraft 2 or another game the screen would just go black and i'd have to do a hard reboot. However in the past few weeks its been either black screening or sort of a bluish white screen with vertical lines on it all the time. Whether gaming or even just watching YouTube videos in Chrome. I do have the latest bios and just a couple days ago reinstalled the newest ATI drivers. That seemed to stop the problems for a day or two but just now browsing on chrome with iTunes going the screen went that weird light blue with vertical lines. Its extremely frustrating to say the least and even somewhat embarrassing (watching youtube videos with a group of friends and its needs to be restarted twice
). So is this like anything all of you very computer savvy people have heard of or is my 5850 most likely defective? Thought i'd check here before Dell as I hate phoning them (can never understand what there saying). I've monitored my temps a couple times in the past and they seemed pretty normal from what I could tell. Nothing really high.
Thanks for any responses guys, Its very frustrating when your baby isn't running at full efficiency so hopefully someone can help me out. Anything I can try to avoid a tech ripping open my M15x is greatly appreciated.
Oh ya just thought I should mention this, also a couple weeks ago I installed Civ 5 as well as Fallout New Vegas. The installs went smooth but if memory serves I accidentally reinstalled Directx from Civ 5 when I already had the latest one installed. Not sure if that could be causing any issues as I did get the black/ blue screen randomly before that. Thanks!

Viruses
Hi,
I've been told there's viruses that captures the video feed from webcams. I'm worried about this and it's a huge invasion of privacy. I'm trying to figure out what I can put over the webcam on my notebook without damaging it so I can still use it when needed.
Suggestions?

Elitebook and battery charging, can it be disabled?
Hello everybody
I recently bought 8440p and it seems to be great machine, but I'm missing one thing from Thinkpad -laptops. In those you can set the battery to stay, for example, 40 % charge all the time with it's power manager software when laptop is on AC power. This prolongs the life of a lithium battery considerably, as you can see here:
Has anyone heard that this could be enabled in Elitebooks?

E500 LCDmade
I thought LG is a manufacturer of LCD panels for notebooks and TVs. It is a shock when I look up the LCD manufacturer code for the E500.
It SHP13DA ..It sounds like a Sharp LCD panel.. I used another software to check and it indicated the LCD was made in the year 1990.
Not sure why LG uses other companies LCDs?

exact same s/n numbers differend optical drives
Hi guys
its nice to be here.
Well this a weird one to me but can you explain for me why! I have a samsung NP-x20 and the power module burnt out on the board and when i took it apart i broke the pins on the keyboard connector to the MB. so ive decided to get second hand x20 of the same S/N number but it had bezels missing but worked fine. Obviosly it was to take the bezels of mine and put it onto the one that worked and so i would have a nice working notebook. The problem came to me trying to put on the bezel from my laptop optical dvd/RW to the working one. It was a different front on the optical drive yet it said the same things and looked exactly the same?? The only thing i can do now is take out the optical drive completely and replace the one in the working notebook! I dont now how to do this so any help you can give is a must:
Model: NP-X20C000/SUK
S/N: 952893DY2002420
(this is mine that dosent work)
I just thought it was strange that there arew to different optical drives in what seems an identical notebook.
Cheers

HP dv6z-SE User Review
The latest version of HP's mainstream 15.6'' notebook has two versions; one which uses the new Intel processors and one of which is equipped with the new processors from AMD. Well, technically there are four versions because each processor variant has what HP calls the "Select Edition" -- which can be equipped with a backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, quad-core AMD or Intel processors, a touchscreen, and comes with a metal chassis. I went back and forth between both the Intel and AMD options, as well as the Ideapad Y560, but eventually decided that the dv6z-SE was the best option for my brother. Are the new processors enough to get AMD back into the notebook market? Read on the find out.
Specifications
Build and Design
If you have read my review of the new HP dm4t then you basically already know everything that you need to know about the build quality on the dv6-SE. Every part of the notebook, other than the bottom, has an etched metal finish making the notebook feel very sturdy. Just like on my dm4t, there is almost no flex. The palmrests are strong, the hinges are tight enough to keep it shut when held upside down, and even pressure to the lid doesn't cause the screen to distort. It takes significant power to twist the display. The only slight flex that I have found is right below the optical drive but one has to exert significant pressure to experience it. All in all, the notebook feels amazingly solid.
The only parts of the notebook that are warm are the left palm rest, slightly, and the back left by the vent. The entire right side stays very cool and the bottom isn't even warm, except by the vent. These are amazing results for a quad core, much lower than Intel's quad cores. They are lower than the Intel counterpart, the i5-520/540M, to the N930 as well.
Under normal use the noise is barely audible, actually slightly quieter than my dm4t, but under heavy load the fan starts spinning extremely fast to keep the notebook cool. This is to be expected with any entertainment/gaming notebook under load, though. I have said it before and I will say it again, better for it to be loud and hot by the vent when under load then quiet and hot internally.
Conclusion
Starting at $50 cheaper than its Intel counterpart the dv6z:SE is a viable mainstream notebook with a lot of power for what you pay, the quad core N930 configuration cost $30 less than the i5-430M and from early benchmarks the N930 is as strong as the i5-520/540M. The build quality and extra features separate it from the mainstream notebooks of competing companies and I would definitely recommend it.

Pros:
- Price to performance ratio
- Build quality
- Extra features (backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, touchscreen options)
- Switchable graphics
- Stays cool, cooler than its Intel couterparts
- Screen resolution will turn people away. Why no higher res option on the Select Edition, HP?
How to: Replace your broken (8600M GT) graphics card (in the [I]FL90)
Okay, it has come down to this - your 8600M GT finally gave up. Well, look on the bright side, you are quite lucky that it survived quite long!
Plus, you are lucky that your laptop has and scroll down to Installation step by step guide and follow these simple steps.
After that, your system should have the latest drivers.

After that, your system should have the latest drivers.
5. Tools
The most essential thing for me was temperatures. Performace also, but only a second priority.6. Results
I do not only want to see my current temps, but also see the history, even better, be able to log it to a file.
I used RivaTuner with my 8600M GT, but didn't get it working with my new card.
The only tool I found that worked for me and was able to log temps, was the ATI Tray Tools.
I also tried EVGA Precision, which did not work at all, as well as GPUTool, AMD GPU Clock Tool, PCWizard and CPUID HWMonitor, as well HWiNFO32 which were in parts able to show temps, but not to log them (maybe I missed the option!).
Performance-wise, the card is okay. I am not sure if it is really performing better than my 8600M GT - my only benchmark is my subjective experience while playing ArmA - no numbers no nothing! So I could just be wrong.7. vBIOS flashing
Temperatures range from low 50's while idling, mid 50's while writing this guide (for the last 3 hours), low 60's while playing videos, and a maximum of 88 C while playing, but also there mostly in the low to mid 80's though.
This is without undervolting, just thermal paste and heat sink modification. I can live with that, and my new card as well, I think.
I need to do this myself first, to be able to report on it.8. Problems
9. Something missing
- external monitor not working
- this problem remains until now
- others have this problem too
- a system BIOS upgrade vom 1.16 to 1.18 did not cure it
- the best I got so far is to remote-desktop-connecting the FL90 from a netbook that is connected to my external monitor, doing so allows me to work fairly decent with the FL90
- external sound was not working
- after disassembling it again, I un- and replugged the connector of the audio connectors, and it worked - I must have failed to connect it properly the first time - I kept this point in here as a remainder: always double-check your connectors
Did I break something?
Same for my original WinXP SP3, a newly installed WinXP SP3, as well as a newly installed Win7 system.
Any clues?
I would appreciate any help!
You tell me10. Special Thanks
To whom ever is running and moderating this forum, and a special thanks to anyone who took the time and helps/helped me resolving my problems, especially Daniel Hahn who pointed me several times in the right direction.11. Updates
Thanks everyone!
- up to now, I never got the ATI 3650 DDR3 256MB to give me a signal to my external monitor
- ATI 3650 DDR2 512 MB worked instantly, also with external monitor
- ATI 5470 works, too, also with external monitor
- baking both of my 8600M GT cards for 10 minutes at 180C got one card back to live
Studio 15 CPU stops switching frequencies after sleep?
I've noticed that after sleeping/waking up a few times, my Studio 15 seems to stop switching CPU frequencies and locks the multiplier at 6x (half the CPU's top speed) even if a load is placed on the processor, which makes everything sluggish. I've confirmed this with Resource Monitor as well as CPU-Z. Normal behaviour would be switching up to a higher multiplier whenever the processor is busy, and puting it back to 6x when idle. I've confirmed its not a heat issue. Sleeping/waking again sometimes fixes this, sometimes it doesn't, and a full restart always fixes it. I have a Studio 1555 with a T6500,Radeon 4570, 4GB RAM, WD Scorpio Blue 250GB, and the latest (A12) firmware. Any ideas? This is getting really annoying.
Seems to happen more often on battery, but it does happen on power too.

help with my BenQ Joybook 2100E PLEASE HELP
Hello. I have this problem. My keyboard for my labtop stopped working. I suspected it may have been a virus, so I plugged in my usb wireless mouse and keyboard and they worked fine. But here is my problem: I suspected that my labtop had a virus so I downloaded a virus scan from the internet and put it on to my labtop from my other computer. The scan found no viruses. So then I thought I could fix the problem by formatting my computer and reinstalling windows. Well guess what? It didn't fix my problem when I formatted my labtop and reinstalled windows. My labtop's keyboard still won't work (as in it won't allow me to type in anything). I am perplexed about this problem and do not know what to do to fix it. Please help me! =)
Thank you so much for any help I can get =)

Acer Aspire 7520 trouble. :( Wont turn on!
Update:
Just wrapped the notebook inside a blanket and overheated it, then let it cool down.
Now it works.
All i have to do now is to remove the Nvidia gpu stuff left behind and it should be ready for use again.
Edit:
My problem is exacly the same as the one described in this thread:
What i have tried to do is:
Clean computer and reapply thermal paste. (Always a good thing to do)
Replace HDD. (Did not work)
Replace RAM. (Did not work)
Replaced the Nvidia Geforce 8400m G with ATI Mobility HD 4570, but still it did not work.

Installing Express Gate after clean install
Does anyone know if it is possible to install Express Gate after having done a clean win 7 install (not from recovery discs, but from win 7.iso)?
Will it boot with the same key (twin turbo)?

Getting an Optibay
Hey Guys,
So I did just pull the trigger on new 15 i7, and I want to make it even better by adding an SSD.
Where did you get your optibay tray? I've seen few on ebay but was wondering if anybody could share their experience getting one (quality, etc)
Thanks,
Arv

M11x R2 NVidia Optimus Issues
So I recieved my M11x-R2 today. First two games I tried to install were Fallout 3 and The Witcher. However, it appears that neither game wants to work with Optimus. Fallout 3 detects the GFX prior to load so it tries to use the Intel card and crashes on load. The Witcher throws a Minimum system requirements not met error.
Figured I'd start a thread for anyone having similar issues and if anyone has found a workaround.
Thanks,

Bad Company 2 Friends
Nothing is funner than playing BC2 with a buddy, so why not start a thread where we can all share our in-game names and add eachother to our friends lists.
. Please click on the "Downloads" link at the top of their page (upper right). Download the proper 32 or 64-bit client depending on your OS.
When I return your PM, I will include the TS3 server address along with your "one-time token". You will use this token which will establish your permissions.
Once you start TS3, click "connect", you will type in
- the server address
- port number (9114)
- your chosen user name (please use either NBR or BC2 username just to help us out thanks. )
- no server password required
- click the "more" button
- in the "one-time token" field copy and paste the token I PM to you in that field.
- click "connect"
The way I see this working is anyone can text or voice chat in the "Bad Company 2" channel. But once you establish who is playing where, join the appropriate "Game 1", "Game 2" , etc channel. I just don't want players playing different maps and getting confused with the cross chatter.
I'm sure there will be better ways, and enabling permissions for everyone to create their own channel, etc. But I will work that out over time.

DELL Dimension XPS Gen 4 Graphics Problem
I have a DELL XPS Gen 4 desktop PC, and if I go to boot it up (with the graphics card in), it gives me the following light code:
A (green) B (orange) C (green) D (green)
(A PCI failure, no PCI cards are even in PC besides graphics)
30 seconds later...
A (orange) B (green) C (orange) D (green)
Indicating a graphics card problem)
If I take out the graphics card, the DELL boots up fine into XP, but its useless to me if the motherboard has no on-board graphics, so please help. If anybody asks, the graphics cards I have tried are nVIDIA GeForce 6800 series 256MB(have 2 of these cards), and a new nVIDIA GeForce 210 512MB.
Thanks!

Windows Media Player ate my WMAs
After ripping all of my CDs a year or two ago and not realizing they were coming in as WMAs, WMP is now declining to recognize only certain WMAs.
I get this super helpful message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
I'm on XP home and WMP 11. Any thoughts? I've googled the heck out of this and can't find a solution. Thanks!

Intel Xenon 7500 and Wndows 2008 Server?
Hello,
I own a pharamacy and we suddenly have need for a server. More and more of our business is requiring electronic records, integration with off site databases for example vendors and suppliers as well as potential federal tracking type databases, additionally there is starting to be a push for electronic records for patieints and we expect this to be more important in the next ten years. Currently we run several workstations which are not networked, so data has to be entered in different locations, we have POS machines as well which are also not integrated and it is no longer efficient to continue to work this way.
We also have the need for a web site that ties in with the order filling process, that will show a customer when their order is ready to be picked up.
Currenty we are running Windows 7 and I have talked to a couple of people who are recommending Windows 2008 servers. But I am really concerned with reliability, the ability of the system to grow with our bussiness and adapt to our needs. My vendors have stated a preference for Windows servers as well, but also say they can work with Linux.
I was wondering if anyone could give me any reassurances or let me know if Windows 2008 servers are reliable, I need them to be able to meet high workflow demands during peak hours but I also need them to be up and runnin 24/7/365, down time is not an option.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Windows 7 file protection? replace exe and save batcherrors
I have a file in a folder called bla.exe
I copy a newer version to the folder
windows 7 asks me if I want to copy and replace the file
I say yes
Windows 7 says "error file is open in another program"
WHAT THE HECK IS THAT!!!
(it is in no way shape or form open in any program except for explorer!)
There is some kind of delayed file protection inside windows 7 that is not in windows XP nor vista.
in XP or vista you can copy and replace files with no problems.
I have searched and found several possible fixes that dont fix the problem:
1.) I set the advanced owner permisions to my whole C: drive to have the owner as Administrator instead of trusted installer
2.) UAC is off and I have set all basic permissions to full control on admin and on everyone
_______________________________________ ______________________
problem #2
In windows XP I edit a batch file and I click save to save its new contents.
In windows 7 I save the edited batch file and it says it is in use and I end up having to save it as a different name or different location!
_______________________________________ _____________________
- I have searched to no end on this issue since win 7 came out.
- I have this same issue after re-installing windows 7 multiple times( and with default settings)
- I have this same issue on different peoples computers that have win 7 too.
_______________________________________ ______________________
the files that have copy errors can be ANY exe and it wont let you unless you wait about 10 minutes after you clicked the original exe.
the batch save problem also exists on any windows 7

Microsoft Powerpoint on Netbooks
Hi
I am interested in purchasing a netbook. I am a medical professional that travels overseas often to give presentations on various topics.
Would a netbook be powerful enough to run Microsoft Powerpoint? Would the connection be compatible with every projector? Are there any netbook specifications (amount of RAMCPU etc) that would be optimal for my needs? Are there any specific netbooks that you can recommend?
Thanks
Rael

can the MBP polymer battery be damaged through overcharged ?
hi all,
i know that its generally recommended to not overcharge batteries. i have e.g. seen several cellphone batteries going kaput within a few months since people leave their phones on 'overnight' charge.
so i am wondering if the same applies for the polymer batteries in my MBP ?
however, if i am not mistaken apple uses some kind of sophisticated electronic monitoring to keep a tab on the state of charge or discharge of the battery.
does this mean that there is no chance of the battery getting damaged through overcharging ?
basically, what good practises can i use to ensure that the polymer battery lasts me a long time ?
thanks !

Desktop specs for photographer
Hello everyone,
I'm a photographer who needs a new computer. I have a fair clue about computers, but I need a good workhorse for Photoshop CS5 and various other photographic applications, and I haven't kept up to date with the PC side of things.
I hate when people show up on photo-forums and just ask "what should I get??", without consulting any photographic website or do any research.
Therefore, I have tried, to the best of my ability, to do a bit of research in this ever-changing market of computers. Initially I was inclined to just go with an iMac, but after a bit of research, I found that there's heck of a better deal, if you assemble your own PC.
What I would like you tech-experts to do, is run through the list and see if - with the listed config - I would run into any compatibility issues. Also, if you see any components that you think would be overkill (or underkill, if that word exists), then feel free to suggest other solutions. You'll notice that I haven't included mouse, keyboard or monitor. I have these from my existing desktop and they will do me fine.
I would like to be so free, as to ask that this thread does NOT turn into a PC vs MAC bashing. I've made up my mind and I'm not going with MAC for this computer, even though every other computer in my house is MAC. I'm not biased and I purchase computers after what I need, not after what is trendy.
I sincerely thank you for your time, and look forward to your replies.
Thanks in advance?
Here are the specs I've found so far (Comments and questions I have are listed under each component). I have found all components at TigerDirect.com - that's not to say that that's where I'll buy them, as, once I settle on a final config, I'll shop around for each component. This spec, buying everything from TD.com, will run me about 1500 USD.
Barebone:
Intel Core i7 4GHZ Overclocked Barebone PC - EVGA P55 FTW SLI Motherboard, Intel Core i7-875K Processor, 8GB DDR3 RAM, Cooler Master HAF 922 Chassis, Thermaltake 850W PSU, Performance Liquid Cooling (999 USD)
OR
AMD Six Core 4.0GHz Overclocked Barebone PC - ASUS M4A89GTD PRO Mobo, AMD Phenom II X6 1055T, 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, Cooler Master HAF 922 Chassis, ULTRA 750W PSU, CoolIT ECO A.L.C. Liquid Cooling (799 USD)
I'll pay 200USD more for the Intel, and I can't really find any good reason to do that, since it seems the AMD processor is better specked.
Harddrives x 4:
Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black Hard Drive - 1TB, 7200, 64MB, SATA 6Gbs (90 USD x 4)
I went with these drives, as they seemed a good midrange solution. I don't really need 4x1TB, but it seems that I don't pay that much extra for these drives vs. 320 GB drives. Ideally, I'd get a couple of SSD's, but I find them too pricey still. However, would this tower/motherboard be compatible with 3.5" SSD's, should I decide to upgrade later?
Videocard:
EVGA 01G-P3-1366-TR GeForce GTX 460 SE Video Card - 1GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, Dual DVI, Mini HDMI 1.4, DirectX 11 (150 USD)
Again, this seemed a good solution, and it came recommended from a photo-blog:
DVD-burner:
LG GH22NS50B DVD Writer - w/o Software, DVDRW, 22X, SATA, OEM (15 USD)
I have one in my existing desktop, which I've never used, but at this price, I can't go wrong, I guess.
Operating system:
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64BIT Operating System Software - OEM DVD, English (110 USD)
Really the only way to go with PC, I guess
Various bits:
I seem to remember reading that, when buying the hard drives, they don't come with the screws to install them in the tower. Is that really true?
Finally, which modem should I get to connect to my wireless network in the house? My network is using an Airport Extreme as router. I've heard horror stories about connecting a pc to an Apple network. Is there any good option for this?
Thanks again. Any answer is much appreciated.

Network working Internet not working.
Hello,
I have an old Amd Duron @850Mhz, 128MB RAM, and running Windows Millenium. I can't access any websites. If i start Internet Explorer (or Firefox) I get Page Cannot Be Displayed message. The local network is working, I can browse my network computers, ping them and get a response. If I ping www.google.com I get Invalid Request message. If I ping any IP from the internet I get the same error message. Does anyone know how I might get Internet working?
Thank you,
Andrei.

Help! Mac OS X upgrade (10.4.6)
Hey guys,
I need advice on which way to go in regards to upgrading my OS.
I currently have an old MacBook pro with intel running 10.4.6 and want a low cost upgrade.
Can I upgrade straight to snow leopard? Or would I gave to upgrade to leopard first?

Printing greeting cards
I create all-occasion greeting cards for my own personal use. I currently use an Epson Stylus Color 980 but it has seen better days. I'm now having problems with it feeding the heavy matte paper. Any suggestions on a printer with good color quality and resolution that will print on paper but not be too terribly expensive...say under $300?
HP J4550 scanned pdf resize image
Scanned pdf files are so large it's difficult to email them is there a way to resize the images?
Look what I found online.
I wonder, is that website safe/reliable to buy stuff from? I wonder if the guy/girl is selling the monitor, keyboard, mouse, cords/cables, and stuff, or if he/she is only selling the physical computer? Also, what do you think of this deal?

speach and mouth movement out of sinc
I have recently purchased a Samsung 8 series 3D LED TV. I have also purchased a Samsung 7.1 Ch Blu-ray Home Cinema System (HT-C6930W)
When watching TV we watch via Virgin Cable. The problem is that the live programmes like the local news and chat programmes show that the persons lips are moving but the words they are saying come through the speakers a little slower. I have been into the set up and changed the speach settings to "0" to try and reduce the drag. This has not really made any difference. I have alo had the Cable people out and they gave me a new set top box which has not made any difference.
If I switch the Home Cinema off, the sound comes through the TV perfectly syncronised.
Any ideas please what the problem may be and what steps I should take to correct the problem. Any responses please make very simple as I an not at all technical. Many thanks

Keynote '09 - Center Object
Keynote '09 Version 5.0.3 on a 21.5 inch late 2009 3.06 GHz iMac with 4GB RAM and Mac OS X 10.6.2
I have successfully created a custom keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+M) for the "Middle" option in the Align Objects submenu of the Arrange menu that both shows up alongside the option and works. However, several attempts to create "Center" shortcuts (eg Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+Shift+N- accepted in System Preferences>Keyboard> Keyboard Shortcuts) have neither appeared alongside the option in the submenu nor worked.
Could the existence of a Center option under the Inspector's Text tab have anything to do with this problem?
Any help on the subject of creating an Align Object> Center option would be much appreciated, even if it is that it is not possible to have a shortcut for that option.

Sony Vaio VPCEA26FA problems
I purchased my Vaio just 2 months back but I have been faced with way too many problems. I hardly use my laptop but four days back all of a sudden my windows would not load and my laptop took ONE HOUR to shut down. I luckily made recovery disks when I first loaded my laptop so restored my laptop using them but the next day the same problem came. Is anyone else faced with the same problems and can you offer me any assistance?
Thank you.
Thank you.
