Small Store looking for Inventory Software

I am a network administrator in the Architectural Engineering world. A friend of mine is opening a small store to sell Architectural Details, Antiques, and Furnishings. He has asked me to help him put together a computer system to keep up with inventory as well as print receipts. I am looking for a software program that will accomplish this. I am not interested in bar code capability or touch screen at all. I have not been given a signifigant budget for this project so something open source or dirt cheap would be greatly appreciated. I am also interested in any advice you could give me on how to maybe accomplish this with Excel?

Having seen someone crash and burn with that, I can't say that's nothing but a very bad idea.

(that was easy)

Sadly this is another area that is cheap and can save you so much time you wonder why some discount it. The 25 buck scanner at geeks.com is a find first timer's scanner.

There are a lot of inventory solutions, both software you install as well as software you can run online. While the free stuff isn't particularly good, there's some very good low-cost solutions. For example, the Yobiz IPS solution is particularly good as well as Numchuk. A google search should turn up more details on those two.

Hello,
I am looking for the same thing. With trying to get started i cannot seem to find the right software for inventory, customers, invoicing, payments, mainly the basics. I am about to the point of giving up, and would apreciate your forwarding me anything you find out. I cannot afford much and everything seems to be over $100 that i find, but hopefully I can find something that will work for now.

Thanks,
Lee
