That's a good sign you had no cd's with it. Vista doesn't come on a cd, it comes on a dvd.
But if you didn't get any dvd also (you didn't tell about that) there must be a recovery partition and possibly you've been invited to make a recovery disk yourself from that.

So my first advice is to go and find the manual that tells about recovery back to factory conditions.

However, it's possible that this is a hardware error: something wrong on the motherboard or with the hard drive so the boot sector of the hard drive can't be found. Then most probably the recovery will fail and you'll need to have your laptop repaired or buy a new one.
Making a Linux Live CD and booting from that to have a look at your hard disk would be a possible way to diagnose this problem a little more.

http://www.ubuntu.com lets you download a common one. Burn it to DVD, using IMGBURN for example (I didn't check what program they recommend on their homepage). It's too large for a cd. Then set your BIOS to boot from CD and see what happens.

That's easy. On the home page there's a red button "Download Ubuntu". That brings you to a page with a button "Start download".

Once ready go down a little bit and click on the "Show me how to make a cd".
When I did that, it didn't work, because the cd wasn't big enough. But after using IMGBURN to burn the image to a DVD it worked perfectly.
