Often, I am away from my kids and would like to video chat with them as well as read them bed time stories.
I am seeking advice as on the most "reliable" low-cost devices(smartphones, tablets, netbooks, etc.) as well as software vehicles (Skype, etc.) one can use to stay connected with my kids.
For example, a tablet using skype, or an iphone 3GS or 4.0 with skype or some other video chat application. Are there alternatives to skype or should I simply invest in a system advertised on televison by Cisco Systems?
Any advice would be beneficial.
Thank you very much for your time. Have a great day.

1.) Smartphones - I'd avoid due to the small screens (not that good for little kids, especially if two or more want to see you at the same time) and comparatively high cost off-contract. Also, front-facing cameras are still not mainstream, so you're looking at a more costly phone if you want them to see you at the same time you see them.
2.) Tablets - Very user-friendly, but currently a more expensive option as there's a premium cost associated with the touch screen.
3.) Netbooks - The more affordable option (solid options can be found for under $300) with built-in webcams of decent quality. Also gives them 'their own computer' to learn on, which is beneficial when progressing with schoolwork.
Regarding software, Skype is the most popular option, but even Yahoo Messenger, AIM, and Windows Live Messenger support video chat functionality if you'd like to explore your options.
Hope this helps,
John

well if you want a cheap reliable option as the fellow says go fr a netbook with built in webcam. they are easy to carry and cheap. i think the best way to keep in touch is with messenger. that way you dont have people interrupting any private chats and can use video quite safely. nice to know you are such a caring father . all the best.
