Playing videos using Samsung combo VCR/DVD on Samsung LCD TV

Hi all,

I am having problems trying to get a combo Samsung VCR/DVD (DVD-V6800) working on his new Samsung 50" HD Plasma TV (Series 7). It is hooked up through the AV leads and the weird thing is that the TV and DVD will both work ok through the unit but when trying to watch a video, it displays "No signal" and will not play. The weird thing is that my grandfather says this is intermittent and that videos will sometimes play and then other times won't. Does anyone have any ideas what may be going on and how to fix it? And help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sorry please note the title is incorrect. It is actually a plasma.

ausguy77,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a problem getting these two sets connected.

How is the unit connected to the television?

One thing you might try is checking to see if editing the name of the input will help the situation. Using a remote control, press the following:

Menu > Input > Edit Name >

You'll see list of available options, including VCR, DVD, and other options. With the DVD/VCR unit connected and powered on, scroll through the options under the EDIT NAME portion of that input, and see if the television response with a picture in the background. Sometimes the inputs can be tailored to run specific devices, which allows for more devices to be compatible with the input.

So in this case, what you might try is:

Menu > Input > Edit Name > (Default "----" might be changed to "VCR" or "DVD") + [Enter]

Does that help?

It's running through the AV leads. Please note that the DVD part works fine as does running the TV through the DVD/VCR combo. It's ONLY the VCR part that does not work.

Thanks also for the tip. I actually set it all up that way from the beginning and selected VCR in the menu. I also tried different options such as DVD and AV yesterday with no change. I'm actually wondering if it may be a problem with trying to play the videos oh the HD TV? I saw something about upconverting in the forum but I'm not totally sure what this is and if it is relevant?

Thanks again.

I am having the same problems playing VHS tapes through the combo player

I have connected comp video out from the player and get intermintent colourless bursts of video on the TV.

ausguy77,

I'm sorry to hear that those tips weren't able to provide a better resolution.

The likely cause of this may be that the VCR signal is being sent at the VCR resolution, which is 240. While many standard definition televisions might support this, many of the high definition televisions don't support resolution under 480.

Not to say that VCRs can't be used on high-definition televisions, however you probably need to consider an up converting DVD/VCR combo which has technology that converts the signal to 480 lines of resolution BEFORE it sends the signal to the television. In some cases, it can even up converted to a higher definition and allow you to view both your VCR and DVD functions through HDMI connections.

Many of the newer DVD/VCR combo units have this feature included, but if you decide to shop for one, make sure that it's a "upconverting" player.

Does that help?
